Barnstable Area & Community Information

The town of Barnstable, although often called a village, is the largest community on Cape Cod. Featuring seven villages; Centerville, Cotuit, Craigville, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Osterville, and West Barnstable. It has long been known for its excellent quality of life and real estate market.

As a community, Barnstable has been recognized by the National Civic League as one of only ten cities in the country to be named as an All-America City in 2007. The award, the oldest recognition for communities in the nation, identified Barnstable based on its ability to identify and resolve challenges throughout the community. Although the award was provided in 2007, Barnstable and its residents have a long history of success since its incorporation on 1639 and which today boasts a population of nearly 50,000 residents.

Located only seventy miles southeast of Boston, Barnstable is bordered by Sandwich and Mashpee on the west, Yarmouth on the east, Nantucket Sound on the south and Cape Cod Bay on the north. Barnstable has an impressive array of natural landscape, with the dunes of Sandy Neck lying along Barnstable Harbor, while the central area of Barnstable is punctuated by Wequaquet Lake and pine and oak trees. Most of Barnstable’s population lives in the southern area near the beaches of Hyannis and Centerville Harbors. Tourism is a large part of the economic foundation of Barnstable, and during the summer months visitors flock to the quaint shops and stores in Hyannis, the many museums and art galleries, and the beautiful beaches in the area.

Hyannis is Barnstable’s largest and most famous village. Hyannis serves as the central business district to Barnstable County and is the home of the Barnstable Municipal Airport, which is the hub of Cape Cod, and the island’s of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Hyannis is also home to many of the main ferry lines to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. The Kennedy family still lives in the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port, which was the summer home of President John F. Kennedy and was the home of Senator Ted Kennedy.
